Male Pelvis & Prostate Ultrasound

Prostate and male pelvic ultrasound provides an assessment of the prostate gland and urinary bladder. The examination may be used to evaluate prostate size, volume, contour and sonographic appearance, as well as the urinary bladder and urinary tract where clinically indicated.

A transabdominal examination is performed through the lower abdomen and pelvis. Assessment may include measurement of the urinary bladder volume before urination (pre-void volume) and the amount of urine remaining after urination (post-void residual volume).

When clinically indicated or specifically requested by the referring clinician, a transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) may be performed to provide a more detailed assessment of the prostate gland.

Preparation for examination:

For transabdominal prostate/pelvic ultrasound

  • Please arrive with a comfortably full bladder.
  • If your bladder is not already full, drink approximately 4 glasses of water one hour before your appointment and avoid urinating until instructed.
  • You may be asked to empty your bladder during the examination so that a post-void residual bladder volume can be measured.
  • For your comfort and ease of examination, two-piece clothing is recommended.

For transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)

  • Specific preparation instructions will be provided when your appointment is confirmed.
  • Please inform us before the examination if you have had recent rectal surgery, significant rectal bleeding or other relevant rectal conditions.
  • The procedure and what to expect will be explained before the examination.
